I’m really scared, please help, braces! A Dentist would be good.?

I got my braces on a month ago. I have bad overbite, and need them for about two years. THe dentist looked at my face structure, and a few other things and said I may develop TMJ. Well, I have 80% of the symptoms now. If I do have it will they take my braces off. I really don’t want them to. Could the braces help fix the problem?

I’m 14 and don’t want to live with TMJ for the rest of my life. How do I find out if I have it, were do I go? And how much will it cost. We don’t have insurance and my da is a retired fire fighter so we live on a fixed salary. My parents are probably going to make me pay to see if I have it ( they all ready told me that ). I live around Fort Worth Texas (it’s about an hour away). Help, thank you.

Braces can be used to correct TMJ and they can also cause TMJ – so it really just depends on your situation. It is important to note that TMJ symptoms will come and go throughout orthodontic treatment, especially as your bite adjusts and your teeth move around. Talk with your orthodontist about your symptoms and they should be able to adjust your treatment plan or incorporate it into your aftercare (splinting for example is a common way to help treat it following braces).

For me, braces have corrected my TMJ and I was prescribed 18months of orthodontic treatment because my bad bite was the cause of the TMJ. I have SEVERE SEVERE TMJ and braces were my last hope… as I was sick everyday with migraines, double vision, dizziness, vomiting/ dry heaves, unable to sleep, and eating was difficult. I was examined by eye doctors and even neurologists before finally going through with my braces treatment.

Braces have changed my life and I was one of their “odd patients” with symptoms that were not the most common for TMJ, but were definately a result of my untreated TMJ. I had tried medication therapy, some physical therapy stuff, and even splinting before I went to full braces. Braces have been painful, but truly amazing treatment for my TMJ.

Try and hang in there and talk with your ortho about your concerns. He or she should listen and if they don’t, talk with your regular dentist and with your parents. Maybe they can help you talk with your ortho.
